Beyond the Competition: The Rise of Collegiate Figure Skating
Balancing academics, athletics, and a passion for the ice.
Collegiate figure skating is about more than competition. It's about athletes who continue to pursue their passion while navigating the demands of college life. Between classes, exams, training sessions, and competitions, these skaters demonstrate a level of commitment that often goes unseen.
Recently, Taylor Art Photos had the opportunity to work with the University of South Florida (USF) Figure Skating Club for a media day dedicated to celebrating the athletes and their love for the sport.
It was an opportunity to capture a different side of collegiate figure skating, where each athlete's personality and individual journey could take center stage.
The Growing World of Collegiate Figure Skating
For many figure skaters, the transition from high school to college represents a turning point in their athletic careers. Some have spent years training and competing, and collegiate skating offers them a way to continue doing what they love while pursuing their education.
College skating clubs also create a sense of community. Athletes with different skating backgrounds and experience levels come together through a shared passion for the ice.
Whether they're preparing for competitions, developing new skills, or supporting their teammates, these skaters are building experiences that extend well beyond their college years.
A Media Day That Celebrates the Individual
Traditional sports photography often focuses on competition, capturing the jumps, spins, and performances that define an athlete's time on the ice.
At Taylor Art Photos, we believe there's another side of the story worth telling.
Our media day with the USF Figure Skating Club was designed to put the athletes themselves in the spotlight. Rather than focusing exclusively on their competitive performances, we wanted to create portraits that reflected their confidence, individuality, and connection to the sport.
Every skater brings something different to the ice, and our goal was to capture that individuality through photography.
These images are more than photographs for social media. They're a record of an important chapter in each athlete's life, something they can look back on long after graduation.
More Than Just a Sport
Figure skating is a sport built on dedication, discipline, and creativity. The hours spent training are rarely visible to an audience watching a performance that lasts only a few minutes.
For collegiate athletes, that commitment comes with the additional responsibility of balancing an academic career.
It's this combination of athletic ambition and personal growth that makes collegiate figure skating such a compelling story to photograph.
Through our work with skating clubs and competitions across Florida, we've had the opportunity to see firsthand the friendships, determination, and sense of community that make the sport special.

We want to thank the USF Figure Skating Club for inviting us to be part of their journey. We look forward to seeing what these athletes accomplish, both on and off the ice.
